Gary prepares for selection posers
it is going to be for players who previously held starting positions to regain them.
On Saturday night against Antigua in the World Cup qualifier Neil Paynter, Albert Smith, Kyle Lightbourne and Elliott Jennings, all seized their opportunities with good performances, leaving the likes of Albert Caisey, Voorhees Astwood, Kenny Thompson, Kevin Grant and former captain Dennis Brown to wonder just how they are going to get back into the team.
The last time full-back Albert Caisey was out of the team, following his sending-off against Norway in February, it took him four matches to get his place back. Because of his, and Astwood's, Seventh Day Adventist faith neither played in the last two matches (on Saturday evenings) and the question being asked now is: Will they automatically return to the starting team? Thompson is in the same predicament, having missed the match against the US Olympic team because of a slight injury and being left out in the second match against Antigua.
Full-back Kevin Grant, who has just gotten married and missed the last three matches, may see his way back into the team blocked by captain Meshach Wade who has made a successful return from midfield to full-back.
"It's impossible to please everybody,'' coach Darrell said after the match.
"Players need to accept some decisions. Elliott has hung in there for a long time and it's not been easy for some of the players.'' Thompson was one of the main sparks in midfield in the two matches against Haiti, with his defence-splitting pass in Port-au-Prince setting up Shawn Goater perfectly to put Bermuda in front. That goal made the difference between survival and elimination in the World Cup.
"Kenny has been playing well for us but if the team is playing well why change it,'' Darrell added. "It was extremely difficult not to include him.'' Former captain Albert Smith has made the most of his return to the team, having withdrawn from the squad for the home match against Haiti in April after being relegated to the subs' bench. He was not considered for the trip to Haiti for the second leg and though he went to Antigua last month he did not dress.
Smith returned to a midfield role on Saturday night in the absence of Astwood and had a good game, setting up Goater's winner early in the second half with a perfectly-placed cross.
Paynter got his chance to play because of Caisey's unavailability and though left-back is not his natural position the recent college graduate had an oustanding match. One person pleased with his performance was Briton Mark Georgevic, a Coventry City share-holder who helped set up trials for Paynter and Philip Clarke at the English club.
"I couldn't have been more pleased with him,'' said Georgevic, who watched Paynter play for the first time on Saturday night. "Everybody who told me about him are absolutely right. His use of the ball for someone who's a defender was excellent. He was very much an attacking left-back.'' No doubt Darrell will have been pleased with the way Lightbourne and Jennings combined up front in the new attacking formation, which sees top scorer Shawn Goater playing in a deeper role just behind the front men.
"It has given me the chance to get the ball more,'' Saturday's two-goal hero said. "I still look at it as an attacking role but it gives the guys more time to see me make my runs.'' Lightbourne, though substituted late in the match, said he was pleased with his performance. "In this game tonight and the game in the United States, Elliott and I have played well together,'' the lanky striker said.
"That's the type of stuff we do at PHC, both strikers working for one another. It's a more relaxing role for Shawn as well. I was feeling very confident.'' The trials for Paynter and Clarke were confirmed in a fax manager Bobby Gould sent to Mark Trott yesterday after Georgevic had earlier spoken to Gould's secretary. Paynter, Clarke, Smith and Lightbourne leave for England tomorrow afternoon while goalkeeper Dwayne Adams and defender Shawn Smith depart on Friday for their trials with Crewe Alexandra.
