Five-man defence abandoned

several changes to his starting line-up as the kick-off to Sunday's vital World Cup second-round qualifier against Jamaica rapidly approaches.

Speaking from his hotel room in Boca Raton, Florida, Darrell admitted that changes were necessary after Bermuda's mediocre showing against El Salvador, which resulted in a 4-1 loss.

"Too many of our players failed to perform near the level we expected of them and consequently there will have to be some changes,'' he said. "I'm still giving it a lot of thought but I'm certain we will not be having the same starting line-up against Jamaica on Sunday.'' Players who he hinted will be axed are Kyle Lightbourne and Albert Smith while the replacements could be Dennis Brown and David Bascome.

Darrell explained that if Brown is brought in he will replace sweeper Neil Paynter who would move up to a role in midfield and Bascome will probably replace Smith in the middle.

By omitting Lightbourne, Darrell would turn to Elliott Jennings and Shawn Goater to spearhead the attack.

It was clear that he was favouring this plan last night as he and the squad were relaxing after a strenuous day that saw them hold an intensive training session and travel by bus to watch a nearby college soccer match.

"Our biggest problem is definitely in midfield where we need more aggression, more ball winners who can go into a strong tackle and come away with possession,'' said Darrell.

"We do have a lot of options like moving Neil up, bringing in Dennis and having Kentoine (Jennings) play in the middle as well. Hopefully we can come up with right combination after watching the film of Jamaica's last match against Canada.'' Darrell also said that he will switch from the five-man defence he has used in the last few games, probably to a 4-4-2 formation or 4-3-3.

The indication from the discussion means that the starting team he is leaning toward at the moment is as follows: Dwayne Adams; Meshach Wade, Leroy Stevens, Dennis Brown, Voorhees Astwood; Paul Cann, Kentoine Jennings, Neil Paynter, David Bascome; Shawn Goater, Elliott Jennings.

DAVID BASCOME -- Probable starter.
