PHC to test the will of hotels
Stadium when the second-placed league champions bid to knock Hotels out of the top spot (9.00).
Since their 3-0 defeat at the hands of Somerset on October 11, Hotels have won three matches on the trot to move into first place though the one-point lead they have over PHC and Devonshire Colts is not much of a cushion.
PHC are joint top scorers with Hotels in the league with 11 goals -- even without the experience of Sammy Swan and Kyle Lightbourne leading their attack in the last month. Instead youngster Kenny Mills has seized his opportunity and is the top Zebras marksman with seven goals so far.
Hotels' Ricky Hill and Coolridge Bell have shown there is no substitute for experience and their four goals apiece have put Hotels in the hunt for a place in the Dudley Eve Trophy tournament over Christmas and New Year.
This will be the first meeting of the teams this year. In last season's two league meetings PHC won both, 3-1 and 4-0, but Hotels should be favourites tonight.
Tomorrow's four matches again involve bottom-of-the table clashes as the last-placed teams, Hamilton Parish and St. David's, clash at Wellington Oval and fourth and third from bottom, Dandy Town and St. George's, meet at St.
John's field.
Parish and St. David's have the worst defences in the First Division so this match could produce some goals as two of the teams tipped for relegation seek to improve their lowly positions. St. David's have conceded 12 goals while Parish have let in 11.
St. George's have let in fewer goals than any other team but their inability to produce the goods at the other end has been their downfall. All three losses they have suffered have been by 1-0 margins and in five matches they have managed just one goal.
Despite their own apparent problems, Town can never be taken lightly, particularly with an attack that contains the likes of Walter Musson, Carlos Smith, Dennis Robinson and Stevie Wade. St. George's know their best chance of beating Town is now, with four players unavailable through World Cup commitment.
Tomorrow's other two matches see third and fourth-placed Devonshire Colts and Somerset looking to close the gap on the leaders. Presently Colts are just a point behind Hotels with Somerset a further point back.
Colts travel to Frog Lane field to meet North Village who picked up their first win in the league last weekend while Somerset take on the other mid-table team, Boulevard, at St. David's.
Boulevard improved their position by beating St. George's on a late Dwight Warren goal last weekend while Somerset lost top spot with their loss to Devonshire Colts, their first defeat.
Also looking to bounce back from their first loss in the league last weekend are Second Division promotion favourites Vasco who meet Somerset Eagles at White Hill field. That loss to Southampton Rangers knocked them out of first place as Rangers moved to the top, and they should hold on to that position with a win over struggling Paget at Southampton Oval.
Other matches see Port Royal meeting Social Club in the opening match at White Hill while Wolves take on Prospect at Devonshire Rec at 1.00 and Devonshire Cougars entertain BAA in the 3.00 match at the Rec.
GREGG FOGGO -- The coach's son is one of the player looked to to provide scoring opportunities for the goal-shy St. George's Colts.
