Gary promises caution
World Cup qualifying match here against Canada, coach Gary Darrell vowed last night.
A loss tomorrow at Swangard Stadium will end Bermuda's glorious qualifying run. A win or a draw will keep Bermuda's chances alive for the return leg against Canada at National Stadium on December 6.
It is with those prospects in mind that Darrell has this week been reminding his squad that they cannot afford a repeat of last week's opening few minutes against Jamaica, which saw Bermuda fall behind 2-0 en route to a heartbreaking 3-2 loss.
"It's a case of not giving anything up early,'' Darrell said after putting his team through a 60-minute work-out at Swangard. "We've got to keep it tight and give our front players all of the 90 minutes to get a goal if they can. We've got to get out of here with a point.'' Darrell's starting line-up will be minus Paul Cann for the first time in this campaign as he prefers Sammy Swan while Shawn Smith regains a defensive midfield role with Kentoine Jennings moving back to centre-half in place of the injured Leroy Stevens who is back in Bermuda.
Darrell explained: "Rip hasn't quite been on song. He's been working hard but he hasn't been playing as well as he can. He'll be in my squad of 16 but he won't starting.'' Darrell is aware that some Bermudians already consider the national squad's run a resounding success. Bermuda had never advanced beyond preliminary round play before, so this year's victories over Antigua and Haiti have elevated Bermuda's international game to a new level.
"We don't want to get caught up in that,'' he said. "People are saying we've already done better than any Bermuda side has done, but we're still capable of getting out of this round. We can definitely compete with the teams in this group and we don't want to think that what we've done so far is good enough.'' To have any hope of advancing, Bermuda will have to tighten up at the back.
After giving up just one goal at home in a 1-0 victory over El Salvador and a 1-1 draw with Jamaica, Bermuda conceded seven away goals in losses to El Salvador and Jamaica.
"We've got to keep a clean sheet, and supply our front-runners with enough chances to score,'' captain Meshach Wade said. "We're looking for two points, but one point will be all right. Hopefully, El Salvador can take three or four points against Jamaica for us. But we've got to take care of our business first.'' Bermuda face a Canadian side who will attempt to regroup after last Sunday's 3-2 loss to El Salvador here. Canada desperately need a victory here tomorrow to avoid needing a win in Bermuda to secure passage to the next round.
Canada will be missing several key performers tomorrow. Big centre-back Randy Samuel has been recalled by Dutch club Fortuna Sittard, and that may be good news for Bermuda's front-runners Kyle Lightbourne and Shawn Goater since there is nobody in the Canadian side that matches Samuel in the air.
The Canadians are also without midfielder David Norman (hamstring injury), goalkeeper Craig Forrest (recalled by Ipswich Town) and young strikers Dominic Mobilio (ankle injury) and Paul Peschisolido (suspended).
Starting line-up: Dwayne Adams; Wade, Astwood, Brown, K.Jennings; Paynter, S.Smith, Bascome; Swan, Goater, Lightbourne.
DAVID BASCOME -- In action against Jamaica's Roderick Reid, the midfielder will be key to Bermuda's playmaking.
