Kyle's world class start!
The biggest football celebration party in Bermuda's history was continuing into the early hours of this morning.
And people in every walk of the Island's society were savouring the thought of next week's game with Jamaica.
Politicians greeted the 1-0 second round victory over El Salvador as a boost to the whole Country.
Youth and Sport Minister the Hon. Pamela Gordon admitted the Island's top dignitaries had not acted in a very dignified manner when Kyle Lightbourne struck the winning goal.
The Premier and the Governor both joined in the celebrations as the stadium erupted, and had to be restrained by a FIFA official.
Sen. Gordon said: "I am over the moon. The goal came from our third corner. I was telling the Premier that it was going to be third time lucky and it was.
The team looks so much better than a couple of months ago. I knew it was coming.
"We all leapt up and jumped forward and the FIFA official made us all go back. This victory is good for Bermuda. It was great to see the country so united, both at the stadium and during the telethon. There was a terrific racial mix and they all came out to support the team.'' To add to the celebration Premier the Hon. Sir John Swan announced that Bank of Bermuda president Mr. Donald Lines, will chair the committee overseeing the completion of the National Stadium.
Opposition leader Mr. Frederick Wade praised the Bermuda effort. He said: "I think it was fantastic. They played well and showed the benefits of being housed together.
"The residents of Bermuda came together beautifully. It was good to see both white, black and Portuguese people standing and celebrating together. It was a remarkable achievement for football.'' It was a well deserved party for fans who arrived in their thousands and apart from a few spots of rain the sun shone on Bermuda's biggest ever soccer moment.
As the game started the crowd quietened until Power FM radio star Mr. Glenn Blakeney scolded the Bermudians over the speakers.
He urged the crowd to start a number of "Bermuda Waves'' and to shout as the team came close to scoring. Kyle Lightbourne's 78th minute goal was greeted with a cheer that must have been heard in the US, hosts of the 1994 finals.
GOAL!!! Kyle Lightbourne celebrates the 78th minute winning goal against El Salvador that sent Bermuda World Cup crazy at the National Stadium yesterday.
