Heartache as Bermuda fall short
Jamaica 3, Bermuda 2 KINGSTON, Jamaica -- Nothing less than four points will do from Bermuda's two remaining World Cup qualifying round matches with Canada after this disheartening loss at the National Stadium in Jamaica put Bermuda at the bottom of the CONCACAF Zone group B.
Bermuda were stung by two Jamaica goals in the first eight minutes, only to come charging back with two goals of their own in a six-minute period early in the second half before losing out on at least a point when Hector Wright scored a 73rd-minute penalty to seal Jamaica's first win.
The loss, which coach Gary Darrell described as even more disheartening than the defeat against El Salvador, leaves Bermuda having to beat Canada twice to stay in contention. Canada suffered their first loss yesterday, 3-2 at home to El Salvador who meet Jamaica in their last two matches.
"I don't think we're out of the competition yet,'' said an obviously disappointed Darrell afterward. "There are still enough games left to get four points, which means having to go for two victories.'' Darrell, who was distracted when Hector Wright drove a long-range left-footed shot into the roof of the net after just four-and-a-half minutes, said he felt "just terrible'' about the way the team lost.
"At half-time I knew we were still in with a chance of getting a point,'' the coach said. "We gave them a couple of goals and made them look better by our defensive errors as opposed to their standard of play. Though they got two goals in the first 10 minutes they weren't dominating us.
"What makes it worse is the way we lost it. This is more disappointing and devastating than the loss to El Salvador. The biggest job for me now is getting the team ready to play again and to feel they are not out of it. But I'm not going to give up on them.'' It was a day of bad luck for Bermuda, which started in the first minute when defender Leroy Stevens injured his knee trying to halt a Jamaica raid that resulted in their first corner after just 30 seconds.
David Bascome, starting in his first World Cup match, looked determined to do well and was Bermuda's main attacking link in the first half.
Unfortunately, at the other end, the defence was not coping well with Jamaica's attack as Roderick Reid side-footed past Dwayne Adams from close range in the eighth minute to make it 2-0 following a cross from the right by Paul Davis.
Bermuda were forced to make their first substitution in the 22nd minute when Kyle Lightbourne limped off with a hip injury to be replaced by Elliott Jennings.
Bermuda were creating chances during that period with Bascome going close with a couple of chances as Jamaica switched their full-backs, captain Barrington Gaynor going from left-back to right-back for Ifedel Hamilton who eventually ended up in midfield before being substituted in the second half.
Midfielder Christopher Ziadie and forward Reid both wasted good chances to put Jamaica even further ahead late in the half before Horace Pitt put an effort over the bar in injury time.
Bermuda started the second half with their second substitute Sammy Swan coming on in place of the injured Stevens who had not recovered from that early knock.
Bermuda, spurred on by a large following estimated in the region of 300, gradually began to put Jamaica's defence under pressure as Paul Davis' miss in the 56th minute -- after springing the offside trap only to be denied by Adams -- looked like coming back to haunt them.
Leon Minott came on to replace Ziadie in the 58th minute as Hamilton moved to midfield. Moments after Neil Paynter's shot was deflected for a corner, Bermuda pulled a goal back in the 60th minute through top scorer Shawn Goater.
Goater's free kick came off the defensive wall and when Dennis Brown followed up to test 'keeper Warren Barrett with a dipping drive which he let slip from his clutches, Goater pounced to drive home the loose ball.
That goal really got Bermuda going as Jamaica began to look suspect under pressure. The equaliser came in the 66th minute when a cross to the far post was met by Paynter who powered a header past the stunned Barrett.
Jamaica coach Carl Brown said it was a goal of international standard but Bermuda's day of misfortunes was still not over as Paynter was penalised for a hand-ball in the Bermuda penalty area in the 73rd minute. The referee allowed Jamaica to have the advantage before pointing to the spot after the shot had been put wide.
Bermuda battled to the end and were causing Jamaica all sorts of problems with high balls into their penalty box. Jamaica came close to effectively ending the match in the 88th minute when, after Goater was robbed on the edge of the Jamaica penalty area, Reid raced clear down the left before putting his first shot against the near post and the rebound wide.
But right on full time only a good interception by 'keeper Barrett denied Bermuda a point as he hurried off his line to catch a cross from Kentoine Jennings off the head of Goater.
Jamaica, who were missing two players through suspension, had two further players booked yesterday. Durrant Brown went into the referee's book in the 15th minute for a foul on Lightbourne and Reid followed him in the 71st minute after bringing down Kentoine Jennings.
Jennings had to be carried off for treatment and was off the field when Jamaica scored their winner though he did return.
"I think we should have wrapped it up early in the game,'' added Jamaica coach Brown. "We allowed the Bermuda team to come back. They had no option but to come out and attack and our midfielders just got caught on the edge of the Bermuda 18-yard box.
"It's important we get four points from our two home games. We have been playing well but we really need to beat El Salvador to give ourselves a chance.''
