Gary holds off on naming starters
El Salvador with coach Gary Darrell conceding only that striker Kyle Lightbourne will be one definite change to his starting line-up on Sunday.
After last Sunday's lacklustre 1-1 draw against Jamaica at National Stadium, Darrell indicated that there will be "some changes made,'' but he has been unwilling to disclose just what his intentions in this area will be. Many have suggested that Rotherham United professional Shawn Goater should return to lead the attack instead of being used as a midfielder.
Even Goater declared at Wednesday's pep rally at Albuoy's Point that his preference is to operate at the front of the attack, but Darrell has recently said that he is of greater value to the team in the middle at this particular time.
It has become clear that Darrell will not be provoked into making radical changes, indicating yesterday that his final team selection will probably be made just after they arrive in El Salvador today.
"By that time I should have some idea of the changes I intend to make, at this time the only definite one I have in mind is having Kyle Lightbourne return in place of Sammy Swan,'' said Darrell.
His departing tip was that he was hopeful of returning home on November 16 with at least three points from the three matches. "But we are going to have to work hard for them, that's for sure. We worked hard enough in Bermuda to get the points we have,'' he said.
Thanks to the rally and tremendous send-off, the morale of the team was boosted to unlimited heights according to the coach, leaving them on an extraordinary high as they headed out on this venture, which has them playing three tough matches in two weeks.
There was some concern about the condition of Goater after he missed their afternoon training session at National Stadium on Tuesday but Darrell explained that he was at the hospital receiving treatment for a foot injury.
"It wasn't that serious but he wanted to get first-class treatment for the knock just to make sure. I don't expect it to be of any bother to him as we go into Sunday's game,'' said Darrell.
One person who was not a member of the contingent that departed yesterday was goalkeeper Dwayne Adams, but he was scheduled to meet up with them at Miami airport when they arrived yesterday.
Adams had to return to school at High Point College in North Carolina after the El Salvador game, but arrangements have been made for him to join the national squad on weekends for the forthcoming World Cup preliminary round fixtures. As a result of the arrangements made he will only miss school days on Fridays and Mondays for the next three weeks.
With Adams being unavailable to train with the squad this week Darrell does not expect it to have a negative effect on the 'keeper's performance at all.
"It's no big deal, it just means that we will have to rehash a few things when he joins up with us, nothing more is required because he is a seasoned member of the squad and one who is quite mature,'' said Darrell.
Speaking from North Carolina on Wednesday night, Adams said: "I'm looking forward to joining up with the players on Thursday evening. I have been working out this week by doing a lot of jogging, light weight work and participating in drills with the ball thanks to the assistance of help from a friend at school.'' He blamed himself for not getting to the cross that led to the equaliser by Jamaica but said that the incident was now behind him as he focussed on the challenge ahead.
"I can't let things like that linger on, I am trying to concentrate on nothing but Sunday's important game.'' IN SEARCH OF ... -- Bermuda's national team embark on ajourney that will see them play three World Cup matches in two weeks starting with Sunday against El Salvador.
