The poll by Harris & Mitchell Associates of Bermuda was commissioned by supporters of Tourism Minister the Hon. C.V. (Jim) Woolridge, said Mr. Trevor Moniz MP at a news conference.

Mr. Moniz said 650 voters were surveyed between August 18 and 21. Asked whether they would prefer Mr. Woolridge or his opponent, Finance Minister the Hon. David Saul, as Premier, 44.9 percent chose Mr. Woolridge and 17.8 percent chose Dr. Saul, the survey said.

Also, 12.5 percent said they were unsure, 8.2 percent said they preferred neither candidate, and 3.4 percent said either would be fine.

Of those who wanted neither Mr. Woolridge nor Dr. Saul, 3.9 percent said they preferred the Hon. Ann Cartwright DeCouto, 2.0 percent the Hon. Grant Gibbons, and 1.0 percent the Hon. Irving Pearman.

Other names mentioned were Dr. David Dyer (.9), the Hon. Sir John Swan (.9), Mr. John Barritt (.75), Mr. Trevor Moniz (.45). Mr. Frederick Wade (.30), the Hon. Ernest DeCouto (.15), the Hon. Quinton Edness (.15), the Hon. Pamela Gordon (.15), and the Hon. Harry Soares (.15).

Of poll respondents, 55.6 percent said they supported the United Bermuda Party and 33.0 percent said they did not.

While the margins changed, Mr. Woolridge's edge over Dr. Saul remained in place when findings were separated by political affiliation.

In response to another question, 88.9 percent of those surveyed said the Premier "should uphold the wishes of the people as expressed in the recent referendum.''
