More sickness on the Horizon

The ill-fated ship owned by Miami-based Celebrity Cruise Lines arrived on schedule on Monday in Hamilton but by the following day, 50 families had been moved to the Hamilton Princess after complaints of noxious fumes on board the ship.

Horizon moved to St. George's on Wednesday and is expected to sail for New York today.

Royal Majesty arrived on time this week with the promise that St. George's residents will soon find relief from the ship's noisy exhaust vibrations.

Owners, Majesty Cruise Line, are putting $100,000 into four new silencers to halt the irritating vibrations that provoked vehement protests from residents.

Royal Majesty berthed at Ordinance Island on Tuesday with 1,117 passengers and leaves Friday for Boston, said a spokesman from John S. Darrell.

Also in cruise news, Song of America arrived on Tuesday from New York with 1,430 passengers. She shifted from Penno's Wharf to Number 1 Dock Hamilton Wednesday and departs tomorrow.

A Meyer Agencies spokesman reported Dreamward arrived from New York with 1,380 passengers on Monday.

She moved from St. George's to Hamilton on Tuesday and sails today.

Dockyard ship Meridian arrived from New York on Tuesday with 1,265 passengers.

She leaves tomorrow.

A massive 50,000-pound stack arrived on board Bermuda Islander on Monday from Salem, New Jersey. The 60-foot long stack, positioned by a wooden cradle and strapped down tight for the journey, is the second half of a 120-foot Bermuda Electric Light Company smokestack designed to comply with clean air regulations.

It came with a 44-foot accompanying ladder.

"It didn't move an inch,'' exclaimed a Meyer Agency spokesman.

Also on board was a 37-foot motor cruiser, 72 dry containers and seven reefers. Bermuda Islander left Tuesday at 9.30 a.m.

The 289-foot general cargo ship MV Saturn berthed at Number 7 Dock, Hamilton en route to Key West, Florida.

The 2,449-tonne ship with an Antiguan flag arrived last Saturday from Salem, New Jersey with a 26-foot motor cruiser and 71 containers of which six were reefers. She departed the following day. Meyer Agencies also reported Telnes a gravel container ship arrived from New Brunswick this week.

Telnes berthed at Penno's Wharf, St. George's to discharge the load before returning to her port of origin. Oleander arrived on Sunday from Salem, New Jersey with 131 dry containers, 43 reefers, two flat bed trailers with steel and building equipment and two container chassis, reported a Container Ship Management spokesman.

John S. Darrell reported the arrival of the Gentian a US Coast Guard seagoing buoy tender which arrived at Number 5 and 6 docks, Hamilton Saturday for "rest and relaxation'' before departing ON Sunday.

Also this week, US tug USNS Powhatan berthed at Dockyard after arriving on Tuesday. She is expected to leave tomorrow, a spokesman said.

US Coast Guard CGC Valiant is due to arrive today and leave Saturday.

UNUSUAL CARGO -- The second half of the Bermuda Electric Light Company's 120-foot smokestack arrived on Monday in good order on the Bermuda Islander .

PLEASURE TRIP -- The US Coast Guard seagoing buoy vessel Gentian arrived in Bermuda last Saturday for a weekend's rest and relaxation at No. 5 Dock, Hamilton.
