Blazers' double blow

The Somerset Trojans returned to their winning ways yesterday in First Division soccer with a hard-fought and tension-filled match at St. David's.

Three well-taken goals by the Trojans were enough to snatch the victory from the Blazers who could only reply with a Wayne Richardson penalty kick early in the second half.

The match was marred by an unfortunate incident that saw Cyril (Dago) Steede, playing for Boulevard this season after coming out of a forced retirement due to an injury, break his leg after an apparently insignificant challenge for the ball.

The lengthy delay that ensued before he was finally stretchered off the field was very soon followed by the ejection of Richardson from the field for retaliation after a harsh tackle from Somerset's Dwight Basden.

As is so typical of the Blazers' matches of late, they ran at their opponents right from the opening whistle and pinned the Trojans in their half of the field for the first five minutes of the game.

But, also as is so typical of the Blazers, they were unable to put away the chances that were being created. Michael Sabeeney, though a little lethargic on the right wing, was continually being given room to manoeuvre by his marker, Larry Simmons.

Ten minutes into the match Sabeeney eluded Simmons to send a perfect cross right to Dwight Warren on the Somerset penalty spot. The striker could only manage a weak header though that bounced right into the arms of Winslow Williams. Only minutes later both Steede and Warren had volleys go just high of the target after some good approach work had opened up the defence.

The Trojans, however, were always dangerous with Jerry Webb's darting runs down the left flank that continually created havoc for the Blazers' back four.

Midway through the first half, Webb drilled the ball across the goalmouth to Basden whose quickly-taken shot was well saved by Jean Gibbons in goal.

Almost from the restart though, he could do little as once again Webb sent a pass this time to Rodney Bascome who coolly side-footed the ball past him for the opening score.

The Blazers came charging right back and but for a superb save by Williams that saw him tip a goal-bound header from Richardson over the bar, they might have evened the score. But it was not to be for the home team as again only seconds later Richardson had another of his shots cleared off the Trojans' goal-line with Williams clearly beaten.

Having absorbed all the pressure that Boulevard could throw at them, the Trojans again came alive and through fluent movement of the ball and effective off-the-ball running, they notched their second goal only minutes before the half ended. Once again it was Bascome who latched onto a pass near the edge of the Blazers' penalty area and managed to toe-poke the ball past Gibbons at the near post.

Boulevard finally found the net 10 minutes into the second half after referee Dennis Wainwright penalised Williams for fouling Warren in the penalty area.

With Richardson making no mistake with the spot-kick the Blazers looked to be coming back into the match.

In a period of sustained pressure they were awarded five consecutive corners, none of which they were able to convert into goals. Their own poor finishing or fine goalkeeping by Williams proved to be their undoing.

Warren had a beautifully taken free kick pushed over the crossbar by the 'keeper and on the heels of this Sabeeney had a golden opportunity but drove the ball right into the chest of Williams when well placed.

After Richardson was ejected from the match, the Trojans put paid to any hopes that Boulevard might have had of salvaging at least a point when Webb masterfully shrugged off the challenge of two defenders and drew the 'keeper out of position to score the insurance goal into the empty net.
