Contest achieves three-race sweep

The Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club hosted Bermuda Fitted Dinghies racing at the weekend in Granaway Deep. The first race got under way after a long delay for the RHADC Cup.

The fleet eventually hauled off into the first race of 3 windward and 2 leeward legs. At the first windward mark Contest helmed by Somers Kempe rounded ahead of Victory with Michael Oatley at the helm. Challenger and Martin Siese followed with Elizabeth helmed by Jon Nichol in fourth.

All the boats set their kites to head downwind. The fleet spread out on the remaining legs with Contest scoring a win followed by Victory, Challenger and Elizabeth.

Race numer two for the Middleton Shield was started after another delay as Elizabeth and Challenger took time to adjust their rigs. Elizabeth eventually withdrew from the race so the remaining three boats started the 3/2 course.

The first windward leg saw all the boats round the top mark close together and perform a gybe-set hoist of the kites.

Contest in third held outside of the two boats and overtook Victory in the strong puffs. At the leeward mark there all the boats rounded together in exciting fashion.

Contest headed to the right hand side of the course while the two other boats tacked early. Contest was first at the next windward mark having found favorable wind on the right side of the course, while the two other boats challenged each other for second.

At the finish Contest scored another win, followed by Challenger and then Victory.

The final race of the day for the Trott Cup was lengthened to a 4/3 race course as the racing was now back on schedule.

Contest was looking for the sweep and on the first beat was able to get around all the boats by sailing up the left hand side of the course.

At the top mark Victory followed in second, then Elizabeth and Challenger. Challenger ran a fowl of the windward stakeboat and sank leaving three dinghies in the race. Contest continued to extend their lead and got the bullet for the final race of the day. Victory sailed on to second while third place was collected by Elizabeth.

The overall season points for the Coronation Cup still have Contest III first, now with 62.75 points, Victory IV second with 45.75 points, Challenger II at 35.50, and Elizabeth II in fourth with 33.50 points. The next race day will be on September 9 in St. George's Harbour. Elizabeth will be challenging Victory for the Jubilee Cup in the third and final race of the day. Races begin at 12 noon, 1.30 p.m. and 3 p.m.
