Beach boy braves the elements

Trophy and Cooler as the top rider at yesterday's Remy Martin Horse Show at Spicelands Riding Centre.

Competing in the Training level class, George topped the dressage discipline and was second in the jumping aspect for a combined point total of 55.85.

The competition took place before a small crowd of loyal horse enthusiasts who braved the monsoon-like conditions to support their favourite riders.

They were not disappointed as both riders and their mounts put on splendid performances under trying circumstances. There were several large puddles in the jumping arena but this failed to dampen the spirit of the competitors.

Young Tiffany Heslop (Allspice) showed her pedigree with a trifecta of wins in the Pony Division. She swept aside all comers in the dressage and jumping, and easily took the combined training award.

Other multiple winners were Lesley Lee and Joy Nash.

Lee was first in the Intermediate level dressage riding Candy Candito and then pressed her steede on to two more triumphs. These included leading the way in the Preliminary level dressage and combined categories.

A score of 63.93 in the latter dressage event allowed Lee to hold off the challenges of Jackie Fitton aboard Snuff Doc Bar (59.29) and George (55.36).

Meanwhile, Nash (Gabriella) parlayed herself to a double helping of success at the Third level test two dressage and Fourth level test one dressage.

Derek Trimingham tried but failed to unseat Nash in the first discipline, falling short by less than four points, 43.03 to 46.97. Nash was unopposed in the second event.

Jill Terceira and Dale Rochester put on quite a show when they lined up for the Open horse jumping event.

Terceira, who has enjoyed a degree of success overseas this year, outdid Rochester who rode his horse Symphony to second and returned to guide Napoleon to third.

In all there were over 20 first-place prizes awarded, and on hand to make these awards were Olympian Mary Jane Tumbridge along with fellow international rider Dennis Cherry and youngster Robert Hind.

LEAPING LEE -- Lesley Lee seen riding Candid Candito to second place in the Preliminary jumping class at yesterday's Remy Martin Horse Show. Lee also captured three first-place finishes in dressage and combined training.
