Figures reported in the Caribbean Journal this week state that Caribbean hotel occupancy fell by 0.2 percent in July, the region’s second straight month of annual decline, according to a report from STR, an organisation which tracks supply and demand data for the hotel industry and provides market share analysis for international hotel chains and brands.Bermuda figures for the second quarter of the year dropped by more than 12 percent compared to last year, when a total of 210,964 visitors came here during the months of April, May and June.The figures follow a four percent decline in the total number of visitors in the first quarter of the year and bring total arrivals for the year to date to 244,220, compared to 275,109 in the first six months of 2012.In the Caribbean, the online news site said the drop followed a 0.9 percent decrease in June, the first time the Caribbean hotel industry has experienced two straight months of year-over-year decline since October and November of 2010.Occupancy numbers were also reported, and were at 71.2 percent in July, down from 71.3 percent in July 2012.While occupancy was down, revenue was up. The Caribbean Journal stated: “There were bright spots, however: average daily rates rose 3.9 percent to $171.08, while revPAR (or revenue per available room, is a performance metric in the hotel industry, which is calculated by multiplying a hotel’s average daily room rate by its occupancy rate) rose 3.7 percent to $121.75, according to the report.”
