Boy, 14, beat up teen at Harbour Nights

A 14-year-old admitted beating up another teen during Harbour Nights, leaving him with a broken jaw and bruises.

In youth court the defendant, who cannot be named because he is a minor, pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm to a boy on July 15. Crown counsel Auralee Cassidy told the court that at 10.20 p.m. the victim arrived at Hamilton Police Station to report the assault.

About five minutes earlier the victim was standing in the vicinity of Bees Knees Limited on Front Street when he was approached by the defendant who wanted to fight. The defendant challenged the victim, who refused to fight back, but after the defendant began punching and kicking him a fight broke out.

The victim was pushed in the chest and slapped across the face. He soon fell to the ground where the defendant continued kicking and slapping him about the body. The victim, who had bruising to his face and arms and a broken jaw, was later taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for treatment.

On July 22, the defendant was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm and made no reply, the court heard.

And on August 1, officers made a video recording of an interview with the victim.

Magistrate Tyrone Chin ordered a pre-sentencing report, something always done for minors to help the courts understand the reasons behind their actions.

He released the defendant on $500 bail with a like surety and imposed a daily curfew from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.

He also told the defendant not to associate with people known to be bad, and to stay away from the victim. The teenager will be sentenced on October 21.
