to remember former student Ewan Sampson who was killed in a motorcycle accident in April of 1998.

The school's Student Council declared June 29 Ewan Sampson Day and will stage a number of events to commemorate his service to the school and community and to raise money for the university scholarship fund that bears his name.

"As they have done for several years, the students wanted to remember Ewan as the vibrant, fun-loving and caring person that he was,'' said headmaster Paul Langman.

"They have planned their day accordingly. While there is an appropriate, lasting commemoration of him at the school through the planting of a Poinciana tree -- and in Bermuda the establishment of his scholarship fund -- the students' idea for Ewan Sampson Day is to be upbeat and positive -- just as they think Ewan would wish them to be.'' Students will pay $2 for the privilege of wearing grub clothes for the day and a new Saltus Jazz Band compact disc will go on sale, with $5 of the purchase price going toward the scholarship fund.

Beginning at 9.30 a.m., students will participate in sports activities like softball, swimming, basketball, table tennis and other field games following a short concert on the school field by the Saltus Jazz Band. After lunch, there will be a talent show in the auditorium.

And a donation has been made in memory of Ewan by Saltus mother Marianne Markey, who gave two musical instruments to the school's music department.

"As Mrs. Markey's sons no longer played their saxophone and clarinet, she felt she could give them to the school,'' said Mr. Langman.
