Bermuda Legion aligns with the Caribbean
In the run-up to Remembrance Day, the Bermuda Legion is called to duty on behalf of those who served and this November 11 also marks a milestone for the group, which has undergone striking change over the past year.“We’ve changed our name and constitution to bring the Legion home to Bermuda,” said case worker Carol Everson.“In this way, we can set our own agenda for welfare and for insurance. We can air-ambulance people, we can provide travel costs and cover medical expenses, which the former Royal Bermuda Legion could not.“We can provide immediate assistance for people without having to go to London for it. In this way, we’ve aligned ourselves with the Caribbean nations who have their own Legions — notably Jamaica, which has a very successful Legion.”The mission of the group remains steadfastly the same: to assist war veterans and their widows. The Bermuda Legion is also ready to provide “advocacy and support for former soldiers and serving soldiers of the Bermuda Regiment”, Ms Everson added.”However, our fund raising remains constant for war veteran widows, whose assistance from Government has had to be cut in recently years.”Everything the Legion raises “stays in Bermuda”, she said.“We don’t speculate; we don’t invest money — every single contribution for welfare is used for welfare here in Bermuda.”In the ten-day run up to November 11, the Bermuda Legion sets out on its campaign with the signature red poppies.Tag day is held on November 6: to volunteer for the collections, or to assist in any way, contact nosoldierleftbehind@hotmail.comMs Everson highlighted some of the achievements of Charity 809 over the past year.“We’ve helped with air evacuations; we’ve had the Christmas appeal, taking food hampers and baskets all over the Island; we’ve assisted in individual cases of need, helped with healthcare bills, and helped many people find help with the different Government agencies, such as Financial Assistance.”
