No-one was injured during the accident which happened at about 4.15 p.m. and the crane was back on the road shortly afterward, sitting in a nearby bus lay-by with a slightly dented front.

Meanwhile pieces of stone were strewn over the sidewalk and road and a steel gate lay twisted where it had been torn out of the ground by the force of the impact.

The crane was travelling north down Trimingham Hill under Police escort and last night skid marks on the road showed where the crane -- which belongs to D&J Construction -- lost control, tore up the sidewalk and crashed through the stone wall.

A female pedestrian -- who asked to remain nameless -- saw the damage and said: "It's frightening. These big pieces of equipment, even buses and water trucks, drive too fast.

"Its gotten so bad that I'm afraid to even drive into the city anymore. I park out here and catch the bus in, I'm so scared,'' she added.

"Bermuda is so overcrowded, there is too much on the roads and they aren't meant for those big things. The roads just aren't wide enough.''
