Committed: 44 people sign on to become regular blood donors

The Blood Donor Centre at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital has signed on 44 new donors since an appeal was launched in June.A campaign saw six of Bermuda’s athletes promote the importance of blood donation in a bid to boost supplies.Anyone who donates blood up to the end of August will be eligible to win one of two cellphones donated by Digicel Bermuda Limited.Consultant hematologist Eyitayo Fakunle said: “We hope there are still people out there who want to take advantage of this promotion and join Bermuda’s vitally important donor pool.“Our regular donors are incredibly important to us, and having more people join them helps us support a vital service on the Island. These are people who know that 30 minutes once every few months will provide a therapeutic treatment for a child with sickle cell disease, or save someone’s life in surgery.”For more information on how to become a blood donor call 236-5067, e-mail blood.donor@bhb.bm or visit the centre’s page on Facebook.
