The Fire Service has reissued a request that people who intend to burn brush or trash must alert the service both before and after the burn.

The request follows after a brush fire erupted at Point Shares on Monday morning.

"If people must do any type of open-air burning we are asking that they contact the Fire Service before they start and when they are done," said Fire spokesman Lt. Dana Lovell. When asked if the drought-like conditions Bermuda is currently suffering helped accelerate the blaze, Lt. Lovell replied: "Absolutely, there's no two ways about it."

The fire covered about 50 by 75 feet of "nice, tree-lined property" separating to privately owned properties at Point Shares, Lt. Lovell said. It began when some controlled burning being done by one of the neighbours blazed out of control.

The Fire Service was called in shortly before 11.30 a.m., said Lt. Lovell. "It was a difficult fire to extinguish," he said, adding it took two fire trucks and seven firefighters 45 minutes and 2,500 gallons of water to get the blaze under control.

Lt. Lovell was unable to put a dollar value on the damage, however he said both palm and cedar trees were caught in the blaze. No buildings were damaged, and no one was hurt in the fire.
