Elbow Beach clean-up on Saturday

Divers will take to the water and pedestrians will hit the sand in the annual Elbow Beach clean-up on Saturday.

Organised by the Blue Water Divers, Marie Wilson the manager of the dive shop is hoping for an even bigger turnout this year for Project Aware.

The event will begin next to Mickey's restaurant, at 12 p.m. on Saturday and water and soft drinks will be available, with light refreshments provided at Mickey's. Ms Wilson said she was disgusted by the trash she cleared from the beach after July 4 and was hoping this year the event would draw more concerned citizens.

She will even provide trash bags and protective gloves for volunteers who wish to help.

"This year I'm hoping it will be bigger and better than ever. Once again, Bruce Barritt will be helping by providing free sodas for our volunteers and Mickey's restaurant next door will provide delicious pizzas.

"KBB will be collecting the trash to dispose of it at the end of the day. As divers we concentrate on the Ocean and there is no doubt that our beautiful underwater realm is becoming a dumping ground. We do however need to look also at our beaches, as trash left here invariably ends up on the reef."
