Irish ace Coghlan leaves door open for elite mile

he will be returning to Bermuda in January to run in the Front Street Mile.

Coghlan, one of the world's top milers and known in running circles as the "Chairman of the Boards'' after becoming the first and only man in history to run the mile indoors in under three minutes and 50 seconds in 1983, is in Bermuda for the Charity Golf Tournament today and tomorrow to raise funds for sick children in his native country Dublin, Ireland.

"No one has approached me yet but it's doubtful because I'm preparing to run on the indoor circuit in the United States,'' said Coghlan last night.

Coghlan, who turns 40 on Saturday, wants to give himself a very special 40th birthday present in the New Year -- by becoming the first ever 40-year-old to run a sub four-minute mile! That attempt will come on February 5 at the Millrose Games in Madison Square Garden.

"Running a road mile might not be the proper preparation for this,'' Coghlan said of the Front Street Mile, though he has not ruled out competing in the near future.

Coghlan divides his time between New York and Dublin since being appointed in May this year as a Marketing and Communications executive at the Children's Medical and Research Foundation of Our Lady's Hospital for Sick Children.

He has only just started running again at the competitive level.

"I retired from running at the elite level two-and-a-half years ago but one year ago I started jogging again to get background training for the mile,'' he explained.

"On September 13 last, after not being on the track for two-and-a-half years, I ran a 4:06 mile in Edinburgh, Scotland, so that's a good sign. Having lived in New York I felt it would be appropriate to do it in New York. I want to make it a dramatic happening.'' Coghlin has broken the world record for the indoor mile on three occasions and also holds the world record for the indoor 2,000 metres (4:54.07). He won the famous Wanamaker Mile at Madison Square Garden on seven occasions.

Recently he was voted the top indoor athlete of the quarter century by Runner's World magazine and Athlete of the Decade by the track and field writers of America. Last year he was the youngest inductee ever into the Hall of Fame at the New York Athletic Club.

The other sports guest here for the charity tournament is equestrian Eddie Macken who has won nearly every Grand Prix in Europe over the past two decades.

Macken has been on the Irish team for the past 23 years and has won four Hickstead Derbys and three Hamburg Derbys. He was also second in two world championships and this summer represented Ireland at the Olympic Games.
