$2,000 fine for man caught with cocaine and cannabis at roadside stop

A man stopped for a routine Police check was found in possession of cannabis and cocaine, a court heard.

Styles Furbert, a 30-year-old steel worker, was stopped by Police on Parsons Road, Pembroke, at 12.35 a.m. on May 24.

Crown counsel Rob Welling said Furbert was driving a Yamaha motorcycle when officers pulled him over for a roadside 'stop and search'.

He was asked to show his driving licence but when he was told he would be searched, Furbert "became irate," said Mr. Welling.

"He pushed his left hand in his left pocket, pushing something inside it," he said.

When officers asked Furbert to remove his clenched fist, it revealed "a small wrap containing a white powdery substance".

The wrap and two other plastic wraps then fell onto the seat of the motorcycle. Asked what the contents were, Furbert replied: "Cocaine."

Officers then discovered a brown paper twist in his left back pocket. Asked what it was, he replied: "Spliff, marijuana."

On Government analysis, the powder was found to be 0.84 grams of cocaine, and the other wrap 0.96 grams of cannabis.

"It's for personal use," Furbert told Police.

He admitted possession of cannabis and cocaine at Magistrates' Court yesterday.

Furbert said he was struggling with personal issues at the time, but has since turned his life around.

"I was living a reckless lifestyle but I have moved to a new apartment, I have started a new job and I have been granted custody of my daughter," he said.

Acting Magistrate Edward Bailey fined Furbert $2,000.
