Clergy to speak on Independence

Action Association has organised the 7.30 p.m. meeting at Astwood Hall on Church Street in Hamilton.

The talk, featuring four members of the local clergy, is titled, "Independence -- How will it affect you!'' The Rev. Leonard Santucci is to address education, while Canon Thomas Nesbitt will talk about family structure. Pastor Carlyle Simmons' topic is social structure, while Elder Austin Thomas is to address economics.

A question and answer period is to follow their statements.

VANDALS DAMAGE OLD APPLE TREE CRM Vandals damage old apple tree Vandals have badly damaged an apple tree at the Botanical Gardens, ripping out the main branch as they tried to steal the fruit.

The attack happened on Saturday afternoon and has left the eight-foot-tall tree badly misshapen. It was one of only five apple trees in the Gardens and was by far the oldest at about 15 years.

Ms Sarah Vallis, who works at the Gardens, said: "The main branch was broken and the tree was badly damaged, but it will not die.'' GUCCI WATCH FOUND IN GARDEN POL Gucci watch found in garden Police are seeking the owner of a man's Gucci wristwatch found last Thursday in Pembroke.

The watch, described as distinctive and "valuable'', was found in a private garden.

MINISTRY: ROAD WORK ON SCHEDULE TFC Ministry: Road work on schedule The Ministry of Works and Engineering will spend 20 weeks putting new asphalt over five miles of road.

The resurfacing work, which began last week at South Road in Devonshire, will continue on South Road in Smith's Parish and will include Knapton Hill and Harrington Sound Road as far as Wilkinson Avenue.

Minister of Works and Engineering the Hon. Leonard Gibbons, said the Ministry's plan to resurface at least ten miles of road each fiscal year was on course.

In May, resurfacing work was completed on Kindley Field Road and in April the Ministry completed Turkey Hill, Ordnance Island and Duke of Kent Street for the Corporation of St. George's, he said.

PHONY 50 POUND NOTES FOUND IN GRENAD CRM Phony 50 notes found in Grenada Police yesterday warned businesses to keep a look out for counterfeit Bank of England 50 notes.

The warning came after Interpol warned such notes had been discovered in Grenada.

There was no indication the notes had yet reached Bermuda, Police said. Each note bears the serial number A94206847.

FLEA MARKET AT NAS ON SUNDAY MIL Flea market at NAS on Sunday There will be a "Grand Flea Market'' at the United States Naval Air Station on Sunday, June 18, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

The flea market is being sponsored by the United States Immigration Department and the United States Customs Department and will be held just inside the main gate of the base.

PROBATION FOR DRUGS POSSESSION CTS Probation for drugs possession A 17-year-old Warwick man was put on 18 months' probation in Magistrates' Court yesterday after admitting possession of cannabis.

On January 27, Graham E. Sutherland, of Middle Road, was seen by Police with a group of students near the Spanish Point Park.

The officers searched Sutherland, who appeared nervous, and found .03 grams of cannabis.

Sutherland pleaded guilty last month but sentencing was put off for a social inquiry report.
