Coming: Community centre for west end

Canadian base so it can be used as a community centre, it emerged yesterday.

Bermuda Land Development Company spokesman Don Grearson made the announcement as he underlined the group's commitment to provide a facility for Somerset youth in light of recent events.

Last Friday the junior committee of the Sandys Youth Community Club staged a press conference slamming Government's handling of their pleas for a youth centre in Somerset.

That came on the heels of Sandys Youth Group founder Gerald Fubler's statement earlier last week that Government had not handed over a promised facility at the site, which was being used for storage.

Mr. Grearson said: "The company made a commitment to opening a building for the Sandys Action Group and we will live up to it.

"We are going to open the building for them. We are just trying to make the final arrangements and it will happen soon,'' he said.

"There are a few things to be straightened away, such as the certificate of occupancy. The Bermuda Land Development Company is spending money getting the building up to shape so it meets the required standards.'' He added: "There will be a resolution to the situation that will benefit the people of the west end.''
