Dog owners bidding for Crufts spot
Bermuda’s most polished and disciplined four-legged friends will this weekend get the chance to compete for a spot in Crufts 2013 International Dog Show.Close to 100 dogs some from Canada and the United States are expected to turn out to compete in the Bermuda Kennel Club’s 2012 Bermuda Dog Show. The show will take place at Somersfield Academy, in Devonshire on Saturday and Sunday starting at 8.30am.Judges will compare each purebred dog against the ideal breed type, as described in its Breed Standard. Dogs will also be judged on their level of obedience, with both dog and handler scored on their ability to perform a series of exercises, increasing in difficulty from novice to advanced classes.Considered the most relaxed of the competitions is the Rally Obedience Trials, where dogs go through a variety of interesting warm-up and freestyle exercises to test their obedience and agility.Qualifying dogs from each of the four shows become eligible to enter Crufts 2013, the largest annual dog show in the world as declared by Guinness World Records. The main competition is for the Best In Show award, which is hotly contested by dogs and their owners across the globe.Carole Havercroft, the BKC show chairwoman, said this would be the second year the show winners, including Best Puppy in Show and Best Veteran in Show, would qualify for the overseas event. “It’s exciting that we are going to have that again,” she added.Ms Havercroft said approximately 200 people were expected to come out for an afternoon of family fun entertainment this weekend.“You can’t find anything in my mind that is more community and family-oriented than dogs. So many people in this world have dogs as part of their family.”Owners and dogs are encouraged to come dressed up in costumes representing their dog’s heritage, country of origin or national dress on Sunday. For $12, dogs and handlers can enter the fancy dress contest at noon. Half of the proceeds will go to the SPCA.Admission is free, however people are advised not to bring dogs that are not officially entered in the event.Useful website: www.show.bkc.bm.
