Nusum kept waiting
John Barry Nusum will have to wait until today to find out if he has won one of the most prestigious awards in US soccer.
The Furman College striker was one of the top three vote receivers in the men's category of the Hermann Trophy - soccer's equivalent of the Heisman Trophy.
According to organisers, Nusum was due to find out yesterday whether he, Virginia's Kyle Martino or SMU's Luchi Gonzalez had scooped the award.
But as Robert R. Hermann, chairman of the executive committee of the old North American Soccer League, also presented the female trophy winner with her award at a separate venue yesterday morning it is thought travelling time meant the men's award, to be handed over at the winner's college, had to be carried over a day.
"I did speak with John over the phone in my anxiety and questioned whether or not there had been a decision and he said no he had not heard anything," said Nusum's mother Ellvera Robinson last night.
"He is very level headed so he is not too hyped about it. He had work to do for school and he said `Mom, I have to get back to my school work and I will talk to you later'."
