Whale search proves fruitless
body reported off the coast of Bermuda.
Officers searched the area around Challenger Banks after fishermen had reported sighting the second dead whale, in a week.
Last Tuesday, a 30-foot long sperm whale was spotted off Challenger Banks by the crews of fishing boats.
But the Fisheries Department finally moved in when the body almost beached at Pompano Beach. It was towed to Nonsuch Island where it has been stripped of meat so its skeleton can be exhibited at the Aquarium.
Aquarium curator Mr. Jack Ward said: "We have almost stripped most of the meat and blubber off the whale. Most of the skeleton is now in tubs on the shore and the meat has been buried.
"We got a report of another body and Fisheries boats went out to search but found nothing.
"I would be surprised if it was another sperm whale,'' he said.
