Mini-bus vandal jailed
dollars in damages -- after an argument with his girlfriend was given a three-month prison sentence on Wednesday.
Dion Burgess, 26, pleaded guilty to causing unlawful damage to the buses between March 17 and 26 when he appeared in Magistrates' Court yesterday.
Police prosecutor Insp. Peter Duffy said Burgess kicked the buses' dashboards, mirrors, front lights, side lights and indicators and poured brake fluid all over the seats, causing $2,350 in damages.
Burgess at first admitted only breaking two windows but then said: "I had been drinking that night so anything could've happened. Me and my girlfriend got in an argument. I was vexed and I guess I took it out on the buses. I didn't mean to. I was walking across and I saw them.'' Insp. Duffy said the complainant, Leon Fubler, is the owner and operator of the East End Mini Bus Service.
He said Mr. Fubler noticed recurring incidents of damage to the buses which were parked in a vacant lot.
On March 26, Mr. Fubler found Burgess asleep in one of the buses and contacted the Police.
Insp. Duffy said Burgess was unable to give explain why he was there and was arrested.
Burgess was interviewed about the damage to the buses and admitted he was responsible.
"Without a doubt this matter stems from a domestic situation,'' said duty counsel Miss Sonia Grant. "(Burgess) very wisely, rather than harming a human, chose to vent his anger on inanimate objects.'' Insp. Duffy said Burgess is now serving a prison sentence for malicious damage.
"I've given you credit for your plea of guilty,'' Mr. Francis told Burgess.
"It certainly was wise of you not to vent your fury on your girlfriend.
Considering the state you were in, it probably would've ended up in Supreme Court. But this was a lot of damage to valuable property.'' He said Burgess' sentence was to run consecutive to the one he is now serving.
