closed up since the late 1980s, is going to reopen.

St. George's Mayor Henry Hayward last night told a Town Hall meeting that talks with the company have been going back and forth for the past six months.

Responding to a question from the audience Mr. Hayward said the company was talking about opening 100 rooms and all their facilities about two months ago.

He went to say however there is a possibility the resort may open all its rooms if it can bring the shutdown facility up to code. A skeleton maintenance crew is employed on the site.

"We're concerned that it's been dragging on for so long and St. George's could really use this. It would provide a real boost for projects such as the Heritage Plan.

The Town Hall meeting was called to update St. Georgians on progress made in implementing the town's heritage plan.

Mr. Hayward told The Royal Gazette Club Med was concerned with costing out factors such as refurbishing the rooms.

"I would imagine it would take them about six-to-eight months to bring it up to Tourism standards,'' he said.

Secretary of the Corporation of the Town of St. George's Larry Jacobs said the resort operator has been dealing mainly with the Department of Tourism.

"This is clearly a Government issue but rumour has it they wish to reopen and they're looking for certain conditions to allow it,'' he said.
