Lawyer faces impaired driving charges

A private and commercial trust lawyer appeared in Magistrates' Court on Wednesday to face drunken driving charges.

Craig MacIntyre, of Railway Trail, Southampton pleaded guilty to driving while impaired when he was on his way home on March 12.

The court learned that the Police saw a car driving at high speed west on Middle Road near the Fairmont Southampton Princess Hotel. When the Police pulled the car over they noticed the driver's eyes were glazed. When they questioned the man he said he had a “couple of dark and stormys”.

MacIntyre refused to give the Police a sample of his breath for analysis. Crown counsel Oonagh Vaucrosson said MacIntyre has not previous convictions. Magistrate Will Francis fined the lawyer $1,000. He was ordered not to drive any vehicles for the next 12 months.

Cruise passengers admit importing drugs

Two cruise ship passengers from the Bronx were in Magistrates' Court yesterday charged with importation of cannabis, heroin and methadone.

Vincent Paul Alfred, 68 and Jacqueline Arroyo, 39 pleaded guilty.

Crown counsel Anthony Blackman told the court that on April 20 they were on the cruise ship Carnival Legend sharing cabin number 8108 when a patrol dog smelled the drugs that were hidden in their cabin safe. Twenty-four packages of white powder, a bottle of unknown liquid and marijuana were seized.

After Police questioned them, Alfred said the cannabis was his and Arroyo said she had a prescription for the methadone.

Police experts estimated that the 1.04 grammes of heroin had a street value of $5,226 and was 56 percent pure. Mr. Blackman said there was also 2.13 grammes of cannabis.

Arroyo said she had a prescription for the methadone, was a recovering addict of seven years and bought the heroin in New York for $175.

“She bought it just in case the she couldn't bring the morphine (methadone) and would get sick,” Arroyo said.

Acting Senior Magistrate Carlisle Greaves treated both defendants' counts as one count of importation of controlled drugs and fined them $2,500 payable immediately or 90 days in jail.
