Help could be on the way soon for overheated horses trudging the streets of St. George's and Hamilton.

Concerned residents had phoned The Royal Gazette to complain that shade and shelter is not being provided for the horses; their previous shelter was blown away in the storm.

Commuter Sarah DaSilva said she was seeing horses foaming at the mouth from the heat.

She said: "They are sweating. It's the first week in June and people are getting very upset including myself.

"You would not have a dog outside without shade and water so I don't think they should be out there in this heat.

"I called the SPCA four weeks ago but nothing has been done."

Society for the Prevention of Cruety to Animals inspector Charles Whited said the Corporation of Hamilton had just finished erecting a new structure and a new canopy would be put up within days.

And Corporation of St. George's Town Manager Lance Furbert said a shelter would be put on Ordnance Island although there is also shelter under trees in the town square.

Asked why the shelter was still not up two year's after it was promised he said: "I don't know what happened. Since then Charles Whited has been very helpful and we are consulting with him.

"We are going to put it at the cruise ship terminal and had have flattened the area."

He said he didn't know whether it would be temporary or permanent or when the structure would be up.

"It will be sooner rather than later, it's getting hot."
