Fire fighters had a busy weekend with five calls involving flooding and fires.

Four vehicles responded to the Reefs Hotel in Southampton early Sunday after a section of the roof was blown off in what was thought to be a tornado.

Ten fire fighters arrived at the scene at 12.22 and stayed until 12.52.

The Bermuda Fire Service responded to a flood in the Maternity Ward of King Edward VII Memorial Hospital on December 14.

Bermuda Fire Service spokesman Lt. Anthony Caisey said it is thought that the flooding was caused by a burst water pipe. It affected five rooms with a layer of water one-and-a-half inches deep.

On December 13, firefighters went to a blaze on Parsons Road in Pembroke where a mattress was on fire in the yard of a private home.

Five personnel and one vehicle responded to the fire.

Lt. Caisey said that no one knew who had started the fire.

Meanwhile on December 14, the Port Royal Fire Service responded to a flooding at Crossbay Road in Southampton.

The flooding was caused by a burst water main in the property. Four personal and one vehicle responded to the call.

There was a shed fire in Middle Town, Pembroke also on Saturday. The fire caused fire crews some concern because they thought that someone may have been inside of the blaze, but the shed was found to be empty. The cause of the blaze is unknown.

Two vehicles arrived at the scene with six personnel at 7.11 p.m. and they left 45 minutes later.
