In a battle of first cousins, Speaker of the House of Assembly Stanley Lowe triumphed over Calvin Simons in Southampton East, outpolling him by 520 votes to 204.

Mr. Lowe, a long-time representative of the old Southampton East, romped home for the third time he has run against Mr. Simons.

Election Day was friendly, with the candidates sharing an umbrella and jokes.

Mr. Lowe said: "It is a humbling experience to be elected again, and I shall do my level best to represent the constituency.

Mr. Lowe said: "Canvassing was superb, I enjoyed it. The voters have constituency concerns versus national issues.

"They want their roads paved, a light on the corner."

Mr. Simons said: "I've done things without being elected, like the roadwork from Marketplace to Vernon Temple.

"I hope I have the chance to work with them to move things ahead."

"The results show that voters were across party lines."

Of his cousin's loss, he said: "He gave me a scare."

In conceding defeat, Mr. Simons said: "I wish to congratulate him, and assist him in working with the community in any way that I can."

He added: "I did try to keep him under 500!"

Mr. Lowe led the race from start to finish, outpolling Mr. Simons by about two votes to one throughout the count.

One voter highlighted how safe this seat is for the PLP.

Said Louise Fishington: "I didn't come to vote, I came to watch the landslide."
