Magistrates' Court on Wednesday for stealing cheques from his ex-wife and using them to buy more than $300 worth of food and goods.

Calvin Hendrickson, 37, of Sleepy Hollow Drive, Hamilton Parish had pleaded guilty previously to 12 charges which arose from three separate incidents where he stole Bank of Bermuda cheques from Shirley Hendrickson.

He had been charged with three counts of stealing a cheque, making a false document, fraudulently uttering a false document and inducing an employee to deliver goods.

Hendrickson told Senior Magistrate Will Francis that he had paid back almost of all his victims and would pay the rest back shortly.

But Mr. Francis said he was concerned with what help he was getting to help him get off the "chemical substance which was leading him downhill''.

Hendrickson explained that he was getting help for his addiction and that for the first time he was getting help because he wanted to, not because someone had told him to.

Mr.Francis said he would take his word about paying off all his victims and sentenced him to six months on each count which would run concurrently but would be suspended for two years.

The court had heard previously that Hendrickson stole the cheques and used them at the Shelly Bay MarketPlace, Hamilton MarketPlace and Enterprise Grocery where he spent $150, $150 and $85.
