Election is over — it’s time to work together

February 26, 2013Dear Sir,It is becoming abundantly clear to me that a very strident and determined segment of our electorate plan to oppose the winners of general election on December 17, 2012 in everything. It does not seem to matter that the OBA won the majority of the votes cast.It is absolutely ridiculous to posit that what really matters is the percentage of the electorate that chose to stay away. Anyone with a minuscule amount of understanding of politics would know that a non vote is in fact a vote! The winners are most grateful to those who did not vote against them I’m sure. After winning the 19 seats needed for victory, it would then be reasonable for the Government to then proceed to enact policy that they perceive to be in the best interest of the majority.Surveys conducted to determine public sentiment on myriad issues are normally a sampling of 400 citizens or so by telephone. These surveys could hardly be scientific or conclusive, but useful in testing the barometer of the public views generally. There appears to be an attitude of anger and refusal to come to terms with the fact that the PLP were soundly beaten. The right of these Bermudians to dissent should be respected in our democracy but constructively so I suggest. The ability of the OBA Government to succeed for all of us appears not to be welcome. Clearly, they have no crystal ball with all the answers but they do possess the acumen and the business know-how to create jobs. Why on earth, it appears, is there a virulent desire of some in this country for them to fail? Why the ‘us and them’ attitude as refers to the business community and the labour movement? We are all in need of rescue, for heaven’s sake. Are we so foolish as to be selective as to who throws the life ring to the drowning? We will stoutly refuse salvation being offered and throw the life ring ashore? Mr acting Editor, it makes no sense. There is a paradigm shift in Bermuda politics, think not? Read on. Wayne Furbert quits the UBP, sits as an independent and then defects to the PLP government and is rewarded for excoriating them for three decades as incompetent ne’er do wells with a cabinet post - incredible! Randy Horton accepts the Speaker’s role, Terry Lister stands down from the PLP, replete with a oration of denunciation of his party on the floor of the House. What we are seeing is political maturation and evolution before our very eyes.Hooray, better late than never, we invite the disappointed voters to join us in hope and the struggle to climb out the hole that has been dug by others. The time for blame has expired and change we can believe in deserves a chance to succeed.Doing everything in our power to thwart progress is just wrong and against our collective interest. We must chart a course through very difficult seas, what is not needed are those who only seem inclined to punch holes in the bottom. Political partisanship will always be a part of a robust democracy but it does not have to make any of us stupid! Irrespective of how you voted.WAYNE B SCOTT
