We don’t need a referendum on gaming

June 15, 2013Dear Sir,Come on OBA, let’s get like you mean what you say, let’s get on with this gaming scenario. We don’t need a referendum, you are the Government now. Having gaming in present hotels if they so wish and let the outside world know “gaming is on the table” should they have the desire to build hotels in Bermuda. In my opinion, this gaming issue of having a referendum by the end of the year should mean all forms of gaming, not just one segment of it.For instance, are we going to stop Crown and Anchor at Cup Match? Are we going to stop Friday and Saturday night bingo playing? Are we going to stop football pools? Are we going to stop the Racetrack betting on horses? Are we going to stop all the monies that leaves our shores in playing the American and British lotteries? Are we going to stop the local house parties of playing card games with money? Are we going to stop the selling of raffle tickets for different organisations? I think not.If gaming means hotels can or cannot have casinos or having casinos only on cruise ships while alongside in our ports, then in my humble opinion it’s wrong just to have gaming of any kind in Bermuda.I remember the times when the social clubs and bars were stopped from having one arm bandits in their premises, these one arm bandits brought people of club or bar life together. So Bermuda before we decide Yea or Nea about having casinos or not anywhere in or around our shores, remember that gaming is gaming.Let’s have casinos in Bermuda if it means putting new hotels in our islands and to make employment for Bermuda and have strict control over it, I am all for casinos in Bermuda.PETER BROMBY SRPaget
