Bromby teams up with US star

Peter Bromby: (right) will team up with American Mark Watson.

Four-time Olympian Peter Bromby and last year's US national champion Mark Watson will represent Royal Bermuda Yacht Club in next month's inaugural New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup which will feature leading yacht clubs from around the world.

Also on their boat will be the RBYC's Peter Henderson (spinnaker trimmer), Ben Nicolls (mainsail trimmer), Kevin Horsfield and Will Thompson (bow).

Competing in the regatta will be crack teams from the host New York Yacht Club (NYYC), the Royal Canadian Yacht Club (RCYC) and the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club (RHKYC).

The September 15-19 competition will see a total of 19 teams from 14 countries gather at the NYYC's on-the-water clubhouse Harbour Court, overlooking the harbour of Newport, Rhode Island.

Olympic silver medallist and America's Cup skipper Terry McLaughlin will be representing the RCYC as well as highly respected Etchells competitors Warwick Downes and Jamie McWilliam from the RHKYC.

According to a press release put out by the NYYC this week, Bromby "couldn't refuse" when asked to serve as tactician aboard Watson's Swan 42 Tiburon. "I mean, why wouldn't I?" said Bromby, who competed at the Olympic Games in Barcelona, Atlanta, Sydney and Athens.

"I think we have a good crack at it," he added. "Mark is the driving force behind the team and I guess he thought I knew what I was doing."

Soon after winning the 2008 NYYC Swan 42 National Championships, Watson was approached by RBYC to represent the club in the September event.

"I was thrilled when the flag officers invited me to skipper the team," he said. "It's a tremendous honour to represent the club. The RBYC have organised a strong Corinthian team with the likes of Olympic sailors Peter Bromby and Ben Nicolls.

"I'm looking forward to competing against many of the best sailors in the world, including McLaughlin and Ken Read (who will sail with the NYYC entry Arethusa skippered by Phil Lotz).
