Cougars waste good chances

Devonshire Cougars blew the chance to move off the bottom of the Coca Cola First Division last night at the Rec., when they could only manage to share the points with Hotels in a game they dominated.

The draw will have pleased Hotels more than Cougars who were looking to celebrate their first home match with their first victory. On chances created they should have been comfortable winners but in the end had to settle for only their second draw.

Their early pressure paid off when Aljame Zuill put them in front after 16 minutes, converting a cross from the left by Raynel Lightbourne. Cougars were doing all the attacking as Hotels had few chances in the first half hour.

It was against the run of play that Hotels wiped out the Cougars lead in the 38th minute with a well worked goal. Chris Sabir fed Marlon Lindsay a pass on the edge of the box. He laid the ball across to Walter Crockwell and the resulting first time shot found the bottom corner.

Hotels were boosted by that goal and they started to put some good moves together as Sabir and Dennis Robinson worked hard.

Cougars made an early substitution in the second half, bringing on Kevin Simpson for the out of touch Mark Smith. Almost immediately Wali Salaam had a good chance to restore the lead but he shot well over the bar from just eight yards.

Hotels, in a bid to change their fortunes, made a double substitution in the 67th minute when Joey Weeks came on for Michael Holdipp and Dion Wainwright replaced Crockwell.

The Hotels defence was kept under constant pressure but Cougars failed to convert their chances as Hotels hung on.

Cougars had a couple of late chances when Lightbourne headed wide and then in the last minute Devon Brangman blasted over the bar.
