Bermuda is haven for cable ships: Dockyard is becoming Atlantic supply depot

Bermuda is being used as a supply depot for cable ships travelling to Venezuela to repair damage to cables done by mud slides there. This was the reason, given by a Meyer Agencies spokesman, for the large number of telecommunications company vessels that have been, and will be, stopping on the Island over the next few weeks. The cable ship Wave Venture arrives from Mobile, Alabama today and will be berthing at Dockyard for about a week as she takes on supplies. Another cable vessel, Agile , arrived at Dockyard last Friday and will stay in Bermuda until this weekend, when she will sail back to Calais, France. One of the Island's regular visitors, the Sir Eric Sharp arrived in Bermuda last Thursday and will be staying for the next few weeks on station duty. She will shift to Dockyard this Friday. Also berthing at the Island's cargo docks was the chemical tanker Frejutlandic which stopped in Dockyard last Friday to take on fuel. She departed the next day to continue on her journey to Baltimore, Maryland. In other shipping news, the container ship Oleander arrived at Hamilton last Sunday, dropping off 47 dry containers and 31 refrigerated containers. Her loose cargo included ten cars, five trucks, two trailers, one bobcat, one compressor and a road trailer carrying building materials. She sailed yesterday morning for Port Elizabeth, New Jersey. Somers Isles arrived in Bermuda on Monday, bringing with her 98 containers, six of which were refrigerated. Her loose cargo included several bundles of lumber and steel and she will sail tomorrow afternoon. The container ship Bermuda Islander will take her place at the Hamilton docks tomorrow. She will be dropping off 128 containers, including 18 refrigerated containers, and also one 40-foot container. She will depart on Friday. The tanker Coral Acropora sailed for Trinidad yesterday after transferring on oil at the oil cargo Docks at Ferry Reach.
