Bridge team aiming for Olympiad glory

Bermuda will be represented at the 12th World Bridge Teams Olympiad in Istanbul, Turkey this year. The event takes place from October 23 to November 6 and six people will be there vying for a Bermuda title.

The team consists of three pairs: Roman Smolski and Vera Petty, David and Sally Sykes and John Glynn and Bill Par?.

Roman and Vera, the reigning Central American and Caribbean Champions in both the Teams and Pairs events, have been playing together for eight years and are in top form having recently finished second out of 6,187 pairs in the 2004 Worldwide Bridge Contest.

The team is made up of both seasoned internationals and newcomers to this level. The team is attempting to reach the knockout stage of the Olympiad for the first time.

Apart from the inaugural event in Turin in 1960 Bermuda has sent a team to every Olympiad, and this year the event is made possible in large part through the generosity of Park Indemnity Ltd., AON Group (Bermuda) Ltd., Quanta Reinsurance, Ignition (Bermuda) Ltd., British Airways and Meyer Travel Ltd.
