People are being urged to take extra care of their cell phones after a notable increase in the number of thefts.

Police spokesman Dwayne Caines said anyone who has a cell phone stolen should immediately call their service providers and have both the local and international service switched off.

"We are receiving increasing numbers of individuals who are reporting their mobile phones stolen, with the thieves making overseas, as well as local, calls.

"We are advising the public that if you misplace your phone or have it stolen, please call your service provider and have your phone turned off immediately. Also, it is important to note that once you have contacted your local service provider, you must also get your international service cancelled as well.

"These are now two separate companies and two separate processes. Also, we are asking you to contact your service provider and ask about any other security features that come with their service."
