Three Police officers were assaulted over a busy weekend which saw fourteen people arrested.

Two officers were assaulted while on duty when a man arrested for possession of an offensive weapon attempted a jail break early Sunday morning. One officer had to be treated for a broken nose while a second suffered bruising and abrasions.

The assailant was arrested at about 3.15 a.m. on Sunday when Police spotted him leaving the Emporium Building in Hamilton with a knife in his hand. As officers approached the 20-year-old man he attempted to hide the knife by throwing it under a car.

He was immediately arrested for possession of an offensive weapon as well as a number of outstanding warrants.

Back at the Police station however, the man attempted to escape. He head-butted one officer while mounting the attempt and kicked a second officer in the groin.

The man was successfully restrained and detained however, and is expected to appear in court early this week.

A third Police officer was assaulted while off duty early Saturday morning when he attempted to break up an vicious spat between a couple.

The officer saw a man and a woman having an heated argument in the parking lot facing Bank of Butterfield on Front Street at roughly 3.15 a.m.

He attempted to intervene in the argument to prevent its escalation and identified himself but rather than calming the situation, the man who had been fighting with the woman became aggressive toward the officer.

He punched the officer in the face three time when he moved to arrest him and then ran off east along Front Street.

Police are now searching for the attacker and ask that any witnesses or others with information on the attack contact Police at 295-0011.

The attacker is described as black and heavy set in his early thirties. He was wearing a red jacket at the time.

Arrests were also made this weekend for impaired driving, offensive gestures, breaching a protection order and outstanding warrants.
