The Old Town has just received its first two trash trucks thanks to a loan from the St. George's Foundation.

And it could mean restaurants, which currently have to arrange for Works and Engineering to collect their rubbish, could have it picked up by the new trucks.

The Corporation of St. George, which administers the town, felt it was vital the historic former capital got its own trash service rather than lease Works and Engineering trucks.

After casting around for help, the St. George's Foundation stepped in to offer a low interest loan to buy the two trucks, which cost around $130,000 in total.

St. George's Town Manager Lance Furbert said: "They have given us a short-term low interest loan which has allowed us to bring in the trucks. We went to everyone as we desperately needed these vehicles.

"We were leasing trucks from Government who were very helpful, but they have their own responsibilities and we felt we needed our own equipment.

"We may increase garbage collections to restaurants. It is a possibility but there are no details worked out yet."
