Tyrone strikes gold

Tyrone Smith: First place in Amsterdam.

Tyrone Smith continued his fine form of late at the Amsterdam Flame Games in the Netherlands at the weekend.The Bermuda Olympian won the gold medal in the men’s long jump with a leap of 7.82 metres at the Olympic Stadium Amsterdam on Saturday.Russia’s Aleksandr Petrov claimed the silver medal with of 7.73 metres while Britain’s JJ Jegede earned the bronze medal with a best of 7.72 metres.Smith has struck form following a disappointing showing at last month’s World Athletics Championships in Russia where he failed to reach the final.He placed fourth at the IAAF DN Galan Diamond League meet in Sweden last month before going one better to claim the bronze medal with a leap of 7.76 metres at the Gugl Games Athletics meet in Linz, Austria.Last year saw Smith reach the final in the men’s long jump at the London Olympics in England with his final qualification attempt.That showing went a long way towards earning the jumper a third Male Athlete of the Year Award which was bestowed upon him earlier this year during the Annual Sports Awards Ceremony at Fairmont Southampton.
