Mixed fortunes for Bermuda internationals

Perfect response: Milan Butterfield’s Chesterfield bounced back from a disappointing Vanarama National League openening day defeat with an emphatic 4-0 victory at home to Woking on Saturday (Photograph by Chesterfield FC)

It proved an afternoon of mixed fortunes for Bermuda’s players across the Vanarama National Leagues on Saturday.

Milan Butterfield’s Chesterfield bounced back from a disappointing defeat to Hartlepool in the Vanarama National League opener with an emphatic 4-0 victory at home to Woking.

Butterfield played 65 minutes before being replaced by Tyler Denton as the home eased cruised to three points courtesy of a brace from substitute Luke Rawson and a goal apiece from Tom Denton and Alex Kiwomya.

In the Vanarama National League North, Dale Eve’s Spennymoor Town had to settle for a share of the spoils in a 1-1 draw away to Alfreton Town.

Spennymoor broke the deadlock through Glen Taylor’s penalty on the half hour mark, but they were made to rue a defensive mistake at the end of the first-half as a misjudged back pass from James Curtis allowed Elliott Reeves to race clear and slot past the helpless Eve.

The visitors were ultimately grateful to Bermuda’s No 1, who made a number of important saves, denying Reeves, Bobby Johnson and Dan Bradley during the second-half, to preserve a point for his club.

In the same division, Justin Donawa’s Darlington suffered a second successive defeat after going down 3-1 at home to Kidderminster Harriers, who had compatriot Keziah Martin among their squad.

Donawa had a hand in the opening goal after just 11 minutes as he picked the ball up on the right side of the box and drove it into the middle with his cross being inadvertently put into his own net by defender Alex Penny.

However, the visitors responded superbly with goals from Omari Sterling-James and Ashley Hemmings putting them ahead before the interval, before Sam Austin’s late third wrapped up proceedings.
