Sherratt powers to first win at worlds
Championships in Hong Kong yesterday when 15-year-old Tommy Sherratt scored an impressive win against Mehul Shah of Kenya.
Sherratt started tentatively and was down 0-5 in the first game before he settled down. He was then able to use his extra pace and hard hitting to keep his opponent off balance, winning the game 9-6.
Sherratt fell behind in the second game and was down 5-8 but refused to concede the game, levelling the score at 8-8 before clinching this key game 10-8. He then played his best squash of the tournament and took the third game without losing service.
Mel Caines and Nick Kyme were also drawn against two Kenyans in the first round of the plate competition. Both played exceptionally well, particularly Caines who showed tremendous determination against a more experienced opponent. Caines and Kyme both lost 3-0.
Christopher Darrell played Christie Blair of Scotland in his plate match and although outclassed Darrell showed he was not overawed by winning the first point of the match. He continued to struggle for every point before losing in straight games 9-1, 9-0, 9-2.
Bermuda national coach Julian Rose said: "I'm delighted with Tommy's win, our first in the Junior World Championship. The team seemed to be a little more nervous today on their second day of competition, perhaps because they realised just how tough it is to play at this level.
"But they all played really well. We can see a definite improvement in their ability and hopefully we can win a few more matches before the end of the tournament.'' TOMMY SHERRATT -- A winner in Hong Kong.
