The cahow chick which bird lovers have been following through the cahow cam since March is expected to take flight imminently.

The nocturnal chick, which can be observed here, has been preparing to fledge, or fly, in recent nights.

Nonsuch Expeditions team leader J-P Rouja said he, along with Jeremy Madeiros, the government conservation officer, and collaborators from the Cornell lab of Ornithology, have been remotely operating an infrared surface cam to remotely track, film and live-stream the cahow chick and her neighbours.

Over the past few weeks, the chick’s parents have been fattening her up beyond her optimum flying weight. The parents then abandon her in her burrow from which she will emerge at night to exercise and help convert her extra fat to leaner muscle and drop weight whilst growing her wings, until she reaches the optimum conditions for flight.

As of yesterday, the cahow cam chick was expected to be the optimum weight for flight.

Mr Rouja said: “The team will continue to follow and film her nightly until she fledges, starting just after dark each night.

“To meet our star chick filmed during her last health check on June 1, please view the attached video: &t=1s
