It took more than two hours for 20 firefighters to extinguish a blaze in a derelict building in Somerset on Tuesday night.

Fire crews responded to the fire on Somerset Road, Sandys at 8.17 p.m.

On arrival smoke was billowing from the upstairs section of the green two storey building, which borders the Royal Naval field. Fire officials said the building was used by drug users.

Two fire trucks, an emergency service unit, 20 firefighters - eight of them in breathing apparatus - brought the blaze under control by 10.40 p.m.

Extensive structural damage was sustained but Fire Service officials would not reveal an estimate of the damages or what caused the blaze.
