The Labour Day fireworks display at Bernard's Park took on a whole different meaning last night when witnesses watched as sparks trailing from the display ignited a blaze at the Marsh Folly dump.

Two fire trucks and dozens of Police vehicles responded to the out of control blaze around 8.45 p.m.

A Fire Service spokesman said fire fighters had difficulty reaching the several hundred square foot blaze which was confined to the area of the pond area behind the Transport Control Department (TCD), because the pond was an obstacle.

Traffic was blocked off from Bernard's Park and North Village Field for an hour and at press time, around 11 p.m., officers on the scene had opted to let the blaze burn itself out.

It is understood that the fire works display is a first of its kind for Labour Day festivities.

The blaze also caused concern from conservationists, because the Marsh Folly pond area is home to several species of wildlife.
