CableVision to restore service

CableVision hope to get back service within the next four weeks - despite this week's strike and vandalism to its trucks.

General Manager Jeremy Elmas said around 20 non-striking staff repaired major breaks to its fibre-optic backbone over the weekend which sustained major damage from Hurricane Fabian.

He said the key artery would be fixed by today.

He said: "The majority of Paget and the West End now have service again, provided they have electricity and there are no breaks in the cable running to customers' homes."

Pembroke and western Devonshire has already been done said Mr. Elmas.

"As the Bermuda CableVision lines are the lowest on the utility poles, we must first allow Belco to work on the utility poles to secure the appropriate tension to their lines at the top of the pole before we repair our lines, which has caused us some delays.

"As CableVision's grid and Belco's do not overlap, some areas may have electricity but no cable service, while others may be capable of receiving cable service but have no electricity.

"We expect that it will take us another month before we complete all the repairs to these lines because of the extent of the damage."

He said long-term effects on the system could last up to six months as corrosion and lose wires comes to light.

Customers without service will be given a credit which will show on the next invoice.
